Rawson Jay Ames

From the first day I found out I was pregnant and prayed every day that labor and delivery would go lots smoother and be less painful than it was with Avalynn. Well my prayers were answered and Rawson's birth was picture perfect! Here are a few details about the day.

My due date was Tuesday, September 27. At my Dr.'s appointment that day I was only at a 1.5, so we talked about scheduling an induction date. My mom flew in that day and even though I had been thinking I wanted to wait and go into labor on my own, I decided I wanted as much help as possible while my mom was there so decided being induced wouldn't be such a bad idea. My Dr wouldn't have been able to deliver if I did it on Wednesday so I decided to wait until Thursday so I could have him deliver. After my experience with Avalynn I wanted my Dr who knew my history and concerns, he is amazing! We got to the hospital (Medical Center of the Rockies) around 8:30 am and got settled into our room. I had 2 nurses all to myself because one of them was training the other! They started Pit at 10:15 and I was still only at 1.5. Contractions started but weren't painful for a while. Brennen and I just hung out, watched a movie, walked the halls, surfed the internet, and Brennen enjoyed all the snacks in the Nourishment Room! At 1:00 Dr. Priebe broke my water and I was still only at a 2. Around 4:00 I was defiantly feeling it and ready for an epidural. My Dr. said he wasn't strict on when I got it, thank goodness, because I was only around a 4 when I got it. I have no idea how or why anyone would do it without one! I was debating about holding off a little longer but I was glad I didn't because by the time the ordered it, gave me extra saline, and got it in it was another hour. My mom was watching Avalynn and they came by to see us after I had my epidural. Avalynn wasn't too sure about me laying in a hospital bed at first but then she forgot all about it and was all over the place! She found the toy room and kept bringing toys back to my room. And of course she loved the nourishment room too! The Dr checked me at 7:00 and I was at a 5. He put an internal monitor in so they could measure the strength of the contractions. At that point he said if I didn't start progressing more quickly we would talk about different options. I started to get nervous that things were going to go down hill and I was going to end up having a c-section and asked Brennen to say a prayer that I would start progressing. I got a new nurse at 7 and she suggested I try turning to different positions every 15-30 min to see if it would help get things going. She had me lay in an "epidural crawl", that was at 7:30. She said she would be back in 30 min to help me change positions. By 7:45 whenever I had a contraction I could really feel the internal monitor and it was starting to get kind of uncomfortable and painful. The nurse came in at 8:00 and I told her what was going on, she seemed to think that was kind of weird and said she was going to check me to see what was going on. I gave myself a shot of the epidural before she did. She checked me and said "Well your feeling all of that because you are complete". I was a little confused and asked what she meant, and she said "you're at a 10! Let me get everything set up and you're going to have a baby". I couldn't believe it! In an hour I had gone from a 5-10! My Dr. came in along with another nurse and they set the room up for delivery. Looking back now I didn't have time to get nervous about pushing because everything happened so quickly. At 8:20 I started pushing. I could feel when I needed to push but it wasn't painful. After just 14 minuets of pushing Rawson was born at 8:34 pm! When he came out he was super blue and wasn't crying and I remember asking the Dr. if he was ok. He said yes and was suctioning him and then he started screaming and didn't really stop for about 5 min! They immediately put him on me and rubbed him with a warm towel. Once they had rubbed him they put him directly on my chest so we were skin to skin. It was such a difference to be so in the moment and be able to enjoy him right away. There are pictures of me crying right after he was born and they were defiantly tears of joy this time and not pain! Rawson stayed on me for almost 2 hours before they weighed, measured, and did anything to him, I absolutely loved it! They would check both of our vitals but he never left my chest. Within about 30 minuets everything was cleaned up and the nurses and Dr. were done and out of the room. It was amazing how they came in did their job and then were out of there to let us have our time together. Another thing I liked was they didn't give him the eye ointment, shots, etc right away it was about 2 hours after and they did it with him still on me so he had a little bit of comfort. While he was weighed and measured I got up, went to the bathroom and got cleaned up and then we went to our new room. They didn't give him a bath until the next afternoon because they say not washing them right away keeps the smell of the amniotic fluid on them which helps to comfort the baby.

Brennen's parents and my mom came that night to see Rawson. While in labor the only thing I could think about eating after was a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger, fries, and frosty from Wendy's so Rick and Janna stopped on their way to get it for me! I was so impressed with the hospital and absolutely loved our stay there. Every nurse, lab worker, Dr, etc. was so nice and helpful, the food was so yummy, and I couldn't have asked for anything more.  My recovery has been amazing as well, I have felt so good, no complications, and am already feeling like I somewhat have my body back!

Before we left for the hospital

Walking the halls of the hospital trying to get things progressing!

Glad one of us got a nap!

That is so amazing that you got those two hours with Rawson right after he was born! I am sure that created your bond and made it even stronger. What a beautiful story! I can't wait to meet him someday :)

What a cutie! I love the picture where the nurses are holding his little head up and his chunky little cheeks. It sounds like it was a great experience with lots of amazing people around. You can just tell how great the nurses were by their faces in that picture where you are crying, they look like they have melted too! So sweet! Congratulations, he is such a darling little baby!
